3I Group is one of Europe's largest capital investment companies. At the end of March 2011, the group's portfolio had a market value of EUR4.5 billion, broken down by type of investment as follows:
- buyback operations (49.1%): for medium-sized businesses primarily located in Europe;
- development capital (35.9%): operations intended for businesses with high growth potential, execution primarily through acquisitions;
- venture capital (3%): operations involved in the healthcare, electronics, and similar sectors;
- other (12%): minority share holdings.
The group also manages funds on behalf of third parties (EUR8.2 billion in managed funds in 2010/11).
The portfolio breaks down by value and activity sector into industry (37.3%), services (15.5%), consumer goods (11.3%), financial services (6.5%), technology (5.7%), and other (23.7%).
