AKRON, Ohio - December 5, 2017 - A. Schulman Inc. (Nasdaq-GS: SHLM), a leading international supplier of
high-performance plastic compounds highlights its established series of electrically neutral heat stabilized Schulamid polyamides with less than 30 ppm of halogen content.

Most electronic modules fail because of corroded contacts in integrated circuits. This contact corrosion occurs when two metals with different electrochemical potentials are conductively connected by an electrolyte (e.g. water or humid air). Electric neutral (EN) environments are therefore a must in many different markets.

Halogens, like Iodide or Bromine, are suspected to facilitate electrical corrosion and they must therefore be kept at low levels. Generally, 100ppm are seen as an acceptable value in plastic compounds which still allows to reach electrically neutral properties.
New automotive electrical designs, which are smaller, more complex and /or work at higher voltage, call now for even lower halogen levels. Current market discussions seem to establish 30 - 50 ppm as the new level for more demanding applications.

A. Schulman´s well established Schulamidgrades contain heat stabilization systems with very low halogen contents, namely HE, HH, H2, H4 and H5. Considering the increased market requirements, A. Schulman has also set up a specialized working routine to avoid any cross contamination during production. It has also established a dedicated production control protocol, where it is determining the halogen content through internal analysis and introducing extended quality criteria on the Certificate of Analysis.

Based on these actions, A. Schulman can reach a halogen content of < 30ppm for its related existing Schulamidpolyamides.

'A. Schulman is able to offer to its customers established products with very low halogen contents, which already have existing approvals and track records,' states Andreas Dowe, Product Line Manager PA&POM EMEA at A. Schulman. 'The major advantage for our customers is that our Schulamidproduct range is in line with more stringent market requirements without the need for new approval processes. This is an important added value A. Schulman provides.'

Halogen content can also be documented on the Certificate of Analysis on customer request.
