Zurich / Hanover - The fully modular, adaptable all-in-one protection and control relay REX640 makes protecting all your assets in advanced power generation and distribution applications easy throughout the relay's life cycle.

ABB is adding a new member to its prominent Relion® protection and control family of relays for digital switchgear. REX640 is the outcome of a long-standing evolution and builds on ABB's strong heritage of freely configurable multifunctional relays.

REX640 covers the full range of utility and industrial applications and is able to manage multiple applications simultaneously. This guarantees flexible, versatile and cost-efficient protection solutions. In brief, REX640 resets the standards of what is possible with a protection and control device.

The modularity and scalability of both software and hardware not only allow full customization freedom but now also unequalled flexibility in modification over the lifetime of the relay. REX640 is ready to adapt to changing protection requirements, anytime. New software and hardware developments will be continuously and easily accessible. This is asset management at its best.

'REX640 is the outcome of an evolution that will revolutionize the world of distribution protection and control,' said Alessandro Palin, managing director of ABB's Distribution Solutions business. 'It fulfills the efforts of many to introduce a new solution for our customers' needs.'

REX640 has been designed to support the increasing digitalization of substations and thereby a variety of digital switchgear solutions. With a record number of local measurement channels, supporting both conventional instrument transformers and sensors, REX640 is also able to receive multiple streams of sampled measured values via IEC 61850-9-2 LE-based process bus communication.

In addition, REX640 introduces a novel, application-driven approach to the local human-machine interface (LHMI), which allows support for entirely new applications. The intuitive LHMI features a color touch screen that visualizes power distribution process information in a unique way, with increased situational awareness and maximum usability as a result.

REX640 will be released for sale during quarter four, 2018. As a member of ABB's Relion® protection and control family of relays, REX640 further reinforces Relion's decade-long position as the range of relays to rely on. REX640 will be showcased at Hannover Messe 2018 at the ABB booth in Hall 11, Stand A35, installed in the UniGear Digital and ZX2 switchgear.
