The Focus-Abengoa Foundation and Menéndez Pelayo International University open a new edition of the Energy and Climate Change School entitled “Which energy model?”

May 23, 2011

  • Professor Ricardo Hausmann, Director of the Center for International Development of Harvard University and a member of Abengoa’s International Advisory Board will give the opening address entitled “Biofuels seen from the South: impacts on development”.
  • International experts will examine the current energy model, its determining factors and future prospects, over the course of four days.

Seville, 23 May 2011.- Josep Borrell, President of the European University Institute, presided over the opening of the Energy and Climate Change School, entitled “Which energy model?” organised once again by the Focus-Abengoa Foundation and Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) at the Hospital de los Venerables until Thursday 26 May.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Carlos Sebastián, Professor of Principles of Economic Analysis at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, a member of the Board of Directors of Abengoa, and director of this new edition of the School; Daniel Villalba, Professor of Business Organisation at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a member of the Board of Directors of Abengoa; Fernando Luis de Saavedra, Director of the Vice-chancellor’s Office and International Relations of Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP); Patrocinio Rodríguez Ramos, Director of UIMP in Seville; José Domínguez Abascal, Technical General Secretary of Abengoa, and Anabel Morillo León, Director General of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation, among others.

After the opening, Carlos Sebastián presented the program for the course entitled “Which energy model”, which aims to examine in detail the difficult challenge of designing an energy model for the future. The course will also examine the deficiencies of the current energy model in terms of sustainability, and the technological factors and the political and institutional developments required to make this energy transition possible will be discussed.

The director of this edition, Carlos Sebastián, summed up the outlook for the current energy model, its determining factors and future prospects. He emphasised that the current energy model is unsustainable, “mainly due to its reliance on resources that are found in limited quantities in nature”. The model also suffers from other serious problems such as “the environmental impact, which could have severe consequences on the living conditions of our planet, and supply insecurity, with its ability to cause serious interruptions to the functioning of the economic system”.

In terms of developing new technologies in energy transformation and the more efficient use of energy, Professor Sebastián optimistically highlighted that, “a change in the energy model is possible” and that “the main lines run in two directions: technological development and transferring the real costs of alternative energies to users and economic agents”. These are the areas in which this edition of the Energy and Climate Change School of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation and the UIMP will focus.

Following Carlos Sebastián’s introduction, Professor Ricardo Hausmann, Director of the Center for International Development of Harvard University and a member of Abengoa’s International Advisory Board, gave the opening address entitled “Biofuels seen from the South: impacts on development”.

Today’s meeting between senior members of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation and Menéndez Pelayo International University has helped to renew the collaboration agreement between both institutions, which since 2004 has resulted in the organisation of two triennial schools that run their programs and activities during the autumn and the spring in the Hospital de los Venerables, turning the headquarters of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation into a forum for reflection and discovery, given by international lecturers and researchers.

The school forms part of the Focus-Abengoa Forum on Energy and Climate Change, which aims to promote, through public discussions, a genuine open platform for the research, presentation and debate of ideas and results, through actions that it believes are relevant at any given time based on the characteristics of the issues to be analysed. Furthermore, the School aims to encourage a wide-ranging and open debate so that it can incorporate and compare as many alternative initiatives as appropriate in relation to renewable energy and all aspects related to climate change.
