Abengoa awarded two new projects in the space sector

September 20, 2017

  • The company reinforces its presence in this sector with two new contracts and continues to opt for this field of engineering.

September 20, 2017 - Abengoa (MCE: ABG/P:SM), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the infrastructure, energy and water sectors, has been selected by European Launch Vehicle SpA (ELV) and Airbus Defence and Space to develop two new test equipment systems for the space sector. The contracts were signed in June and July respectively, and work will be carried out over the course of 2017 and the first half of 2018.

VEGA-C Launcher

ELV is the prime contractor for the VEGA European Launcher, designed for launching small satellites in low orbits. VEGA is able to place all types of missions in orbit, from small scientific or Earth observation satellites to larger vehicles, and has been successfully operating since 2012. ELV is currently developing VEGA-C, a new version of the launcher which is more powerful than its predecessor as it increases the load capacity by more than 800 kg. It is scheduled to come into operation in 2019.

For this new version, Abengoa will be responsible for the design, production and the validation of the automatic equipment tests (ATE) to be used in the launcher's qualification campaign during Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing, which will be carried out on the Upper Composite UC (UC).

Automatic test equipment for the Ariane 6 launcher

Furthermore, Abengoa will undertake the design, production and the validation checks for the automatic test equipment (ATE) of the Pyro Functional Unit (PFU) for the Ariane 6 future Launcher for Airbus Defence and Space Tres Cantos. The transition stages are crucial to the launcher's flight sequence and require very short activation times that can only be carried out with pyrotechnic devices. The PFU, developed by Airbus Defence and Space Tres Cantos, is the electronic unit that controls the pyrotechnics, and the test equipment developed by Abengoa will be used for the functional test campaigns, the environmental qualification and the completion of the PFU. The work Abengoa is to perform is based on the past experience the company has gained with Ariane 5, in addition to the contract which was awarded last December for the CMFU test equipment for Ariane 6.

Both the Ariane 6 and VEGA-C are the immediate future for Europe's launchers, and the two families complement each other in order to offer a complete range of payload and orbit launches.

Abengoa's involvement in both programs reinforces its position and experience in automatic test equipment for launcher equipment and subsytems, thus enabling the company to gain in knowledge and competitiveness in the aerospace segment. In addition, the company continues to position itself in sectors with high added value such as space, after awarded contracts were announced with Airbus Defence and Space and the European Space Agency (ESA), at the beginning of 2017, for three new projects which have been successfully developed over the course of this year.
