Abengoa participates in Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition

April 26, 2016

  • It is the first high-level assembly that brings together companies, governments and individuals to promote carbon pricing.

April 26, 2016 - Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B/P SM /NASDAQ: ABGB), an international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, has participated in The Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC) which was held in Washington D.C. last week. The CPLC is a joint initiative involving 20 governments and more than 90 companies and other organizations, promoted in the Paris Climate Summit held last December, and whose common objective is to enhance the systems and mechanisms in carbon pricing by means of taxes or the creation of CO2 markets worldwide.

The main conclusion reached at the meeting is that carbon pricing is the most effective way of driving a reduction in emissions by requiring the economic activities to be charged with the cost of the CO2 emitted, and in so doing provide incentives for a low carbon economy and an energy model geared towards renewable energies.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon, World Bank Group President Jim Youg Kim, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde and General Secretary of the OECD Angel Gurría participated in the meeting together with different finance and environment ministers of member countries of the coalition such as Canada, Mexico, Germany, France, Finland, Sweden, Ivory Coast, China and Colombia among others. The event has also served to highlight the importance of coordinating carbon pricing in order to avoid unfair competition and the relocation of companies. The mechanisms implemented throughout the world have trebled over the last ten years, totaling over 7 billion tons of CO2.

Abengoa is also part of the Caring for Climate Executive Committee which is another private initiative set up under the auspices of the United Nations Global Compact.
