Green Pay has scooped the most valuable prototype to come out of the 2018 Beyond Banking Days. By using Green Pay to pay for items, the product will go back into the supply chain after use, making manufacturers - and not consumers - responsible for any waste. By turning the process on its head, Green Pay's makers hope to encourage manufacturers to make more sustainable choices before going into the manufacturing process. ABN AMRO selected the R3 app from an unprecedentedly strong field of participants of no less than 56 selected teams. Together, 288 hackers spent the past 48 hours working non-stop on the bank of the future.

The social challenge honours were nabbed by FundingForce for creating an app allowing consumers to use Tikkie to donate to charities, with both consumers and charities being able to provide updates on the donation's use . The tech award went to Data Exchange 2018 for a platform enabling consumers to share approved data in a GDPR-proof environment, securely, easily and anonymously. Grace Systems was the winner of the health challenge. It succeeded in smartly combining millions of data points in a medical dataset and so accelerating medical research with its algorithms.

Christian Bornfeld, ABN AMRO's Chief Innovation & Technology Officer, comments: 'It wasn't just the winning teams - all participants have shown what the Beyond Banking Days are all about these past few days: contributing as a bank to solving the major issues of our society. How do we ensure security while at the same time guaranteeing privacy? How can we improve the lives of cancer patients? Or how do we encourage recycling of materials and commodities? By listening to what's really going on, by working together across sectors, and by thinking differently from how we've ever thought before. I'm already looking forward to the 2019 Beyond Banking Days.' Marcell Schmidt, Client Director at IBM, notes how the hackathon is the perfect playground to test ideas: 'Everyone comes together to join forces and work on new insights; it's truly inspiring.'
