ACCIONA : awarded end-to-end water management contract in Boca del Río, Mexico, worth 800 million euros

ACCIONA Agua has been awarded the end-to-end water management service for the municipality of Boca del Río, in the Veracruz metropolitan area in southeast Mexico, for a period of 30 years.

Under the contract, amounting to approximately 800 million euros, ACCIONA Agua will manage the provision and distribution of drinking water, operate the sewers and waste water treatment facilities, and manage over 50,000 customers.

The object of the contract is to enhance delivery of drinking water by improving service continuity and the amount and quality of the water that is supplied. ACCIONA Agua will invest 100 million euros in the concession, more than 80 million of which will be allocated to upgrading water infrastructure.

Another notable feature of the contract is an improvement in network efficiency to reduce the sizeable water losses arising in the system, thereby enhancing the environmental impact.

Customer management will involve a transparent round-the-clock information service backed by state-of-the-art computing and communication technologies.

The contract will be managed by a joint venture - Compañía de Agua de Boca (CAB) - comprising the Boca del Río city government (2%), ACCIONA Agua (69%) and Malibran (29%), with ACCIONA Agua acting as technology partner.

Extensive experience in Mexico

ACCIONA opened its first offices in Mexico, belonging to the Infrastructure division, in 1978. The country is now one of ACCIONA's main markets outside Spain, and the company's various business areas are working on a number of major projects there.

ACCIONA participated in developing landmark infrastructure projects such as the Atotonilco wastewater treatment plant (considered to be the world's largest), the Jala-Puerto Vallarta highway and the first General Hospital for the Mexican Social Security Institute in Nogales. ACCIONA is also a member of the consortium that was awarded the contract to build the passenger terminal at Mexico City's new airport earlier this year. ACCIONA Industrial was recently selected by Mexico's Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) to build the power offtake line for the Topolobampo III combined cycle power plant, involving four separate design and construction jobs - two transmission lines and two substations - in the states of Sinaloa and Sonora, under a turnkey contract worth 21 million euros.

ACCIONA is also a leading renewable energy provider in Mexico, with an installed capacity of 557MW in proprietary wind power facilities and 252MW in wind power facilities built for customers. In addition, the Company was awarded contracts in two auctions held last year under the Mexican Energy Reform, for a total of 395MW, which will come on stream in two phases, in 2018 and 2019.

ACCIONA's real estate business is also active in Mexico, with landmark projects in Mexico City and Acapulco. Additionally, the Acciona Microenergy Foundation is undertaking rural electrification projects in villages with under 100 inhabitants, having already benefited 30,000 people in the state of Oaxaca.
