Cobham Flying on MASCOT Lander

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO - Numerous Cobham Semiconductor Solutions products were launched December 2, 2014 as part of Hayabusa-2 sample return missions on the Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout probe (MASCOT) arriving in June 2018. Cobham Gaisler's GR712RC (Dual Core LEON 3FT Microprocessor) is part of the MASCOT on-board computer which also contains Cobham Semiconductor Solutions 160Mbit SRAM memory product. The on-board computer was developed by Cobham Gaisler under contract with Telespazio
VEGA Deutschland.
Japan's H-2A rocket sent the Hayabusa-2 probe speeding away from Earth to intercept asteroid 1999 JU3, an unexplored world about the size of several city blocks. It arrives at the asteroid in June 2018 for a year-and-a-half of close-up surveys.
Hayabusa-2 will drop four landers to the asteroid some time in 2018 or 2019, including MASCOT - the Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout - which rides inside the mothership during it's interplanetary journey.
Cobham Gaisler's (formerly Aeroflex Gaisler) GR712RC Microprocessor was selected by VEGA and DLR, the German Space Agency, for MASCOT's on-board computer along with Cobham Semiconductor Solutions (formerly Aeroflex Microelectronic Solutions - HiRel)
160Mbit SRAM Memory product.
"Cobham's GR712RC microprocessor with SRAM memory met all the requirements needed for the MASCOT on-board computer," said Sandi Habinc, Cobham Gaisler's Managing Director. "The microprocessor and the memory constitute the core of the processing element in the on-board computer, providing a solid foundation and sufficient processing power for executing both the platform and payload software. First in-orbit checkout show that both products are performing as expected."
