AGL Energy Limited (AGL) today received approval from the New South Wales (NSW) Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) to construct the Silverton Wind Farm in western NSW.

The independent PAC accepted the NSW Department of Planning and Environment's (DPE) recommendation to approve AGL's Modification 3 application, which takes advantage of advancements in wind turbine technology and the subsequent reduction in the number of wind turbines to be constructed.

AGL's Silverton Wind Farm project manager, Adam Mackett said this was great news for the approximately $450million project, which has the potential to provide valuable investment in the local region.

'This is a very positive step in the right direction. The project is moving along well, but there are a few key factors to be determined before a final decision is made on whether the project proceeds. These include commercial discussions with a preferred contractor and financing arrangements.

'A final investment decision is subject to approval from the Powering Australian Renewables Fund (PARF). If successful, Silverton could be the fund's first greenfield renewable development and will further bolster AGL's credentials as Australia's largest investor, developer and operator of renewables,' said Mr Mackett.

The PARF aims to invest up to $3 billion to support the development of 1,000 MW of renewable generation, which represents about 20 percent of the Renewable Energy Target (RET).

'As we proceed throughout the project development process, we will continue to consult with the local community. AGL appreciates the community's commitment to the project,' added Mr Mackett.

The Silverton Wind Farm is initially proposed to have a capacity of up to 200 MW and will produce approximately 700,000 MWh of renewable energy annually, which can power more than 120,000 average Australian homes. The renewable energy produced will reduce CO2 emissions by 580,000 tonnes annually, which is the equivalent of taking 170,000 cars off the road each year.
