Air China Ltd. (0753.HK) Vice President Zhao Xiao-hang said Thursday he doesn't think the European Union's plan to charge airlines for carbon emissions will "effectively reduce emissions."
Speaking at a press conference following a signing ceremony in Taipei that marked the entry of EVA Airways Corp. (2618.TW) to the world's biggest airline group, of which Air China is also a member, Zhao said the E.U. plan "only increases the burden of airlines."
He added that a move by the E.U. to forcefully impose the carbon charges could cost the Chinese airline industry up to US$100 million a year.
