Aachen/Germany, September 13, 2011 – AIXTRON SE today announced that EpiLEDs Technologies Inc., a leading LED manufacturer in Taiwan, placed an order for one CRIUS II-L MOCVD system in a 69x2-inch wafer configuration.

EpiLEDs will use the system for the volume production of ultra-high brightness (UHB) Gallium Nitride (GaN) based blue LEDs. The system was ordered in the second quarter of 2011 and following delivery in the third quarter of 2011, will be installed and commissioned by a local AIXTRON service team in EpiLEDs’ state-of-the-art facility in Tainan, Taiwan.

Steve Ku, President of EpiLEDs Technologies Inc., comments: “This is not our first CRIUS II system but it is our first of the enlarged new generation CRIUS II-L. I see it as the foundation for our capacity expansion plans. Our technical team is very familiar with MOCVD technology and they have known for many years that they can trust AIXTRON to always offer the most advanced technology in the field.

We are very proud to be amongst the first to receive the latest generation CRIUS II-L system, the world’s most capacious MOCVD reactor for blue LED production. It will give us an enormous advantage as we strive to meet the challenges of the world’s solid-state lighting marketplace on price and performance.”

Dr. Rainer Beccard, Vice President Marketing at AIXTRON adds, "Reduction of manufacturing cost is the major aim of the LED industry, in particular when looking at the required cost reduction for solid state lighting products. After having analyzed MOCVD related manufacturing costs, it was obvious that the reactor capacity remains the key parameter with the strongest influence on operating cost. We look forward to working with EpiLEDs to bring the new system onstream quickly and efficiently."

The new AIXTRON CRIUS II-L was launched in the summer of 2011 and is the world's largest capacity MOCVD reactor now available with its 16x4-inch or 69x2-inch capacity. Based on the market-proven CRIUS II platform, the enlarged system guarantees customers a seamless transfer of qualified high performance LED processes. The CRIUS II-L reactor is design optimized for wafer sizes from 2- to 8-inch and offers the potential for even further productivity enhancements.
