WEST CHESTER, Ohio, May 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- AK Steel (NYSE:AKS) said today that the company’s Middletown, Ohio coke plant and Mountain State Carbon coke plant in Follansbee, West Virginia, have received the Max Eward Safety Award for 2017 from the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute (ACCCI), a leading industry trade organization.  The award recognizes these two AK Steel sites, along with one other ACCCI member coke facility, for operating the safest cokemaking facilities in America.  These facilities operated the entire year of 2017 without any OSHA recordable injuries.

“We congratulate employees at our Middletown Works for many years of award winning safety performance, and at Mountain State Carbon, for this first time recognition and proven results in embracing the AK Steel safety culture since joining the company in 2014,” said Roger K. Newport, CEO of AK Steel.  “We are honored to be recognized by the ACCCI with this award, which is indicative of the company’s commitment to safety across all of our operations.”  The ACCCI recognition marks the 16th time in 21 years that an AK Steel coke plant has received the Max Eward Safety Award.

“ACCCI is proud to recognize AK Steel for promoting a culture of safety, and delivering exceptional results,” said David Ailor, President of the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute.  “Congratulations to AK Steel and employees at the Middletown Works and Mountain State Carbon coke plants who continue to be role models for the industry for safe operations in the workplace.”
