Akamai Technologies GK (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President Shinji Tokunaga, henceforth 'Akamai') providing the world's largest and most trusted cloud delivery platform, has announced that All Nippon Airways (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO Yuji Hirako, henceforth 'ANA') has adopted Image Manager, Akamai's web image content optimization and automatic high-speed distribution solution.

ANA operates a number of sites, including ANA SKY WEB for checking availability and purchasing tickets, and ANA Mileage Club for holders of its frequent flyer cards. In recent years, website design has focused on high-quality graphics to communicate the value of products and services to users. ANA sites have also incorporated more and more content and become available on multiple device types. However, these changes resulted in increased page size and decreased responsiveness. They were faced with the problem of how to increase responsiveness without sacrificing content quality. Introducing Akamai Image Manager made it possible to keep high image quality, speed up responsiveness while keeping costs under control, and improve user experience.

Image Manager is designed to automatically optimize images for a wide range of user devices and access environments without degrading performance, delivering a superior user experience. The service accelerates sites and mobile applications on any device, anytime, anywhere, by reducing the number of bytes delivered to users. It also helps to eliminate the effort and cost involved in image conversion by automatically optimizing images, reducing the hosting space required to store images.

Takahiro Morishita of ANA's Information Security & IT Architecture Strategy, part of their Innovation & IT Strategy, said: 'After implementation you could see the size of the images go down, and there was a tangible level of increase in responsiveness. We measured site performance when in Europe on business, and found that image size was reduced by 40-60% and image load times were shorter by 15-25%. From an operational standpoint, we no longer have to give detailed instructions for outsourced image creation. We also used to watch the logs and check with the marketing department whenever visits increased, but we don't need to do that anymore. It takes no time or effort now, which is such a huge relief.'

Shinji Tokunaga, President of Akamai Technologies GK, added: 'It's a great privilege for us to have All Nippon Airways, one of Japan's national carriers, implement Image Manager. Modern websites and mobile applications need to use attractive images while also delivering suitable performance. I am certain that Akamai will continue to play an ever more critical role in meeting these requirements. Akamai serves its customers by delivering ever faster, safer and more stable Internet solutions.'
