CHICAGO, July 31, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the world's largest hospital devoted exclusively to clinical investigation, used the Allscripts Sunrise™ platform (NASDAQ:MDRX) to achieve Stage 7, the highest level attainable, on the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model™ (EMRAM). It is the first U.S. government health organization to achieve Stage 7.

The HIMSS Analytics EMR Adoption Model is a methodology that measures progress and cumulative capabilities of EMR systems within hospitals. There are eight stages (0-7) in the HIMSS Analytics EMR Adoption Model, and Stage 7 represents the most advanced patient record environment. Currently, only 7.8% of hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database have reached Stage 7.

"The NIH Clinical Center has done an excellent job creating a best-in-class EMR environment," Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS said. "This is a great example of how a federal institution can indeed implement a complete EMR that helps its staff deliver quality outcomes."

Organizations that achieve Stage 7 on the HIMSS Analytics EMR Adoption Model have demonstrated sophisticated capabilities such as a complete EMR, Continuity of Care Document transactions to share data, data warehousing, advanced analytics, and best-practice governance processes.

The NIH Clinical Center uses Allscripts Sunrise applications both for advanced patient care as well as the technology behind its Clinical Research Information System (CRIS). Allscripts Sunrise, powering CRIS, enables flexible configurations to meet unique research needs and provides an intelligent alert system for guiding newly arrived Research Fellows.

"As the first federal health organization to reach Stage 7, the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center has demonstrated its commitment to using technology to conduct critical health research programs and drive improved patient health worldwide," Allscripts President and Chief Executive Officer Paul M. Black said. "Reaching Stage 7 is a testament to the superior quality of care this organization provides."
