Regulatory News:

Alstom Bharat Forge Power Ltd. (ABFPL), the joint venture company between Alstom (Paris: ALO) and Bharat Forge, has secured an order worth over ?250 million (INR 1570) crore for the supply to NTPC Limited of two units of 660 MW supercritical coal "turbine islands" in Solapur located in the state of Maharashtra in India. Alstom's share of the contract amounts to approximately ?125 million and will be booked in April 2012.

The Alstom Bharat Forge Power Ltd. had emerged as the lowest bidder in NTPC's bulk tender for supply of 11 units of 660 MW super critical Turbine Generator islands. As per the tender conditions, ABFPL is also expected to get awarded an additional order for three units of 660 MW for the Nabinagar site from Nabinagar Power Generating Co. Pvt Ltd (NPGCPL), a JV between NTPC and Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB).

ABFPL's scope of work involves engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection and commissioning of five of a total of eleven 660 MW supercritical units. The 7300 MW tender is the biggest ever initiated by the Indian government. It will increase India's installed power capacity in order to support the rapid growth of the country's economy while providing economically competitive and environmentally efficient technology.

Supercritical plants use steam with very high temperatures and pressure, resulting in a much higher efficiency than conventional sub-critical coal fired plants. This means that a supercritical unit burns much less coal and generates less emission for a given power output.

This contract supports the start of the Alstom-Bharat Forge Joint Venture and reinforces Alstom's presence in India's market for supercritical steam turbine generators. Construction at ABFPL's new manufacturing facility at Mundra, Gujarat is on-going and the factory will start its operations in 2013. The state-of-the-art integrated plant, set up over 120 acres of land to manufacture supercritical power plant equipment with an annual capacity of 5000 MW, will be one of the largest integrated facility for turbines, generators and auxiliaries manufacturing in the country.

"Already recognised in India as a strong player in power generation and after 100 years of contribution to the country, Alstom is now further advancing in the local steam market through its local set-up formed with its JV partner, Bharat Forge. The plant in Mundra is designed for the manufacturing of state-of-the-art steam turbines and generators as well as condensers and heaters. It will significantly contribute to provide competitive and clean power solutions for India's energy needs and challenges," commented Andreas Lusch, Senior Vice President of Alstom's Steam business.
