Initial engineering and permitting work leading to turnkey supply of two ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) steam generators.

London, United Kingdom (30 June 2015) - Amec Foster Wheeler announces today that it has been selected by RWE Power AG to carry out the first stage of the design, supply, erect and commission two 550-megawatt (MWe) ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) steam generators. They will replace the existing four 300-MWe pulverized-coal units at the same RWE power plant site in Niederraussem near Cologne, Germany.

The value of the contract has not been disclosed. In this first stage, which is one of three potential stages on the project for the company, Amec Foster Wheeler will provide limited engineering services to help obtain regulatory permits for the project.

The CFB steam generators are highly efficient and are designed to burn a mix of different lignite fuel sources. When approved, the new power plant, known as BoAplus, will be designed to achieve efficiency greater than 45%, enabling it to use less fuel while producing the same amount of electricity and with lower emissions than the previous units.
These two new CFB units for RWE power plant continue Amec Foster Wheeler's development of earlier supercritical CFB work, including the ongoing ultra-supercritical CFB's being supplied for Kospo's Green Power Project in South Korea.

Gary Nedelka, Group President of Amec Foster Wheeler's Global Power Group said: "Our ultra-supercritical CFB steam generators at the heart of this project will not only improve the efficiency of the plant but will also result in markedly lower emissions. We are pleased to be chosen by RWE to play a part in this landmark energy project for Germany."
