Revenue Passenger Miles

American Airlines reported that total revenue passenger miles (RPMs) for January 2017 were 17.04 billion, down 0.3% from January 2016 traffic. The breakdown from the domestic segment was represented by 1.55 billion passengers from operations in the Atlantic in January 2017, down 4.5% from its January 2016 1.62 billion benchmark. The Latin America operations (including Caribbean operations) reported net RPMs of 2.66 billion for January 2017, down 8.1% from 2.90 billion for January 2016. The Pacific operations reported a massive surge of 30.2% from January 2016 to January 2017, where the net RPMs were 986.74 million and 1.28 billion for the respective months. The net RPM from domestic operations for January 2017 stood at 9.66 billion, down 1.7% from January 2016.

The Company reported net international RPMs for January 2017 at 5.50 billion, down 0.2% from January 2016. The contributions from Mainline and Regional segments stood at 15.16 billion and 1.88 billion RPMs, respectively, for January 2017. Mainline segment reported a decline of 1.1% from January 2016, while the Company's Regional segment observed a 7.4% surge in January 2017 from its January 2016 1.74 billion benchmark. The decline in mainline operations was observed due to the repainting of former US Airways Express regional jets, where the final US Airways mainline aircraft, an Embraer E190 was painted on January 27, 2017.

American Airlines reported net ASMs from international operations at 7.01 billion for January 2017, which represented a 0.6% decline from January 2016. The Mainline segment observed net ASMs of 19.05 billion while the figure stood at 2.63 billion for Regional operations for January 2017. Both segments represented an advance over January 2016 results where the mainline operations reported a 0.3% and regional operations reported 8.2% surge in January 2017.

American Airlines observed a total load factor decline of 1.1 points from January 2016 benchmark of 79.7% against the 78.6% load factor reported for January 2017. While the domestic segment reported load factor of 80.2% for January 2017, down 2.1 points from January 2016, the International segment operations reported a load factor of 78.4% for January 2017, up 0.3 points from January 2017. The total enplanements for January 2017 were reported to be 15.13 million, representing a 0.7% decline from January 2016. The Company observed system cargo ton miles to grow 15.1% from January 2016 (165.60 million) to January 2017 (190.59 million).
