American Public University System (APUS) today announced that Jim Sweizer, vice president of military, veterans and community college outreach, has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of College and Military Educators (CCME). The award, presented in tandem with the recent 2015 annual CCME National Symposium, recognizes individuals for their significant ongoing contributions to CCME and military education.

Sweizer, who served as CCME president in 2009, joined American Military University (AMU) in 2005 after serving over 33 years in the Air Force on active-duty and as a civil servant. In his current role for AMU, he oversees all military, community college and veterans outreach activities for APUS and serves as the main liaison between the university and Department of Defense agencies. He currently plans to retire in July 2015.

“I’m extremely proud to congratulate Jim on this well-deserved honor,” said Dr. Wallace E. Boston, APUS president and CEO. “For the last decade, his efforts have been instrumental to the growth and continuing success of American Military University as the top choice of servicemembers across all branches of the armed forces.”

“I will always be grateful to President Boston and senior management at APUS for allowing me to continue helping servicemembers achieve personal success through education,” said Sweizer. “My time at APUS has been most rewarding and an experience I will never forget.”

Sweizer has an extensive management background in adult continuing education at a variety of overseas and stateside military installations, and was named chief of the Air Force’s Voluntary Education Program in 1999. In this capacity, he was responsible for the development and implementation of policy for off-duty voluntary education, dependent education and veterans’ benefit programs, and also managed the Air Force Tuition Assistance Program.

Sweizer previously served as chair of the University Professional and Continuing Education Association’s Military Division from 1995-97, and was a member of the advisory boards of Service members Opportunity Colleges and the Military Installation Voluntary Education Review. He is a graduate of the Air War College non-resident program and Harvard University’s Institute for the Management of Lifelong Education (MLE).
