American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, has named Martin Uczen as vice president of Business Development and Strategy, effective June 24, 2015.

In this new role, Uczen will work with Strauss and other senior leadership and the Business Development teams in both the regulated and market-based businesses to identify, evaluate and execute growth strategies for the company. He will also function as a key leader in American Water’s Innovation Development Process, which tests, develops and implements new technologies in the water industry.

Uczen brings more than 20 years of experience in corporate strategy and finance. He most recently served as director, Corporate Strategy and Business Development with Verizon Communications, where he led the strategy and execution of its energy and utilities line of business. Prior to that, he spent 14 years in several roles of increasing responsibility at Duke Energy. In his most recent position with Duke as director of Corporate Strategy and Growth Initiatives, his leadership in growth initiatives resulted in the launch of commercial wind, solar and electric transmission businesses.

Uczen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y., and an MBA from the University of North Carolina. He is also a certified public accountant in New York and North Carolina.
