NEW $1.5 MILLION WATER LINE TO SUPPLY PUBLIC WATER FOR LIMERICK RESIDENTS WITH CONTAMINATED WELLS LIMERICK TOWNSHIP, Pa. (September 30, 2014) - To replace water wells contaminated by

Trichloroethylene (TCE) and Tetrachloroethylene (PCE), construction will soon begin to install nearly
1.5 miles of new water lines to bring public water service to affected residents in Limerick Township. Backed by strong support from State Senator John Rafferty (R-44), the approximately $1.5 million project
will be financed by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), along with funding from Pennsylvania American Water.
In 2000, the Montgomery County Department of Health contacted the DEP about a newly constructed well in the Hilltop area with levels of TCE contamination above federal safe drinking water standards. Several monitoring wells were installed, but the source of the groundwater contamination was never discovered. As a result, various parties came together to develop the project to extend public water service from Pennsylvania American Water's adjacent Royersford system to supply 25 homes with contaminated wells.
At today's groundbreaking ceremony, Sen. Rafferty said, "Finally after several years, these 25 homes will be provided with safe drinking water. The Pa Department of Environmental Protection and Pennsylvania American Water worked in partnership with Limerick Township and my office in making this possible."
"Thanks to the public-private partnership that formed with Senator Rafferty's leadership, we teamed with DEP and Limerick Township to bring a permanent solution to residents who have lived without safe, clean water for many years," said Brian Hassinger, field operations manager for Pennsylvania American Water. He said the company is contributing $750,000 to the total project cost.
"Pennsylvania American Water's contribution made this project possible, allowing us to provide a long-term clean water supply to residents in this community," DEP Southeast Regional Director Cosmo Servidio said. "We are grateful to Senator Rafferty for all of his hard work moving this project forward."
"Clean water is often taken for granted but something those affected by this contamination could not do for many years. We are thankful for the effort put forth by all to ensure that these Limerick families will now be provided the clean water they need and deserve," said Limerick Township Board Chair Elaine DeWan.
Pennsylvania American Water's contractor Fidelity Construction, in conjunction with Limerick Township's contractor Joao Bradley Construction Company Inc., will install approximately 7,800 feet of ductile iron pipe for the affected areas along North Limerick Road, School Road, Saylor Road, and Haines and Koch Drives.
In addition to the new water main to provide clean drinking water to the affected areas, crews will install 17 fire hydrants to enhance public safety protection for this area of Limerick Township.
