VIRGINIA AMERICAN WATER LAUNCHES $600,000 MAIN REPLACEMENT TO IMPROVE WATER SERVICE ALONG ST. ASAPH AND GREEN STREETS Alexandria, VA (July 23, 2014) - Virginia American Water today announced the start of a water main upgrade on St. Asaph Street in Alexandria that will enhance water quality, improve service reliability and increase flows for fire protection for the community. The cost of the water system improvements is approximately $600,000 and will replace 1,500 feet of aging six-inch pipe to a larger eight-inch pipe.

The project is part of nearly $4 million in infrastructure investments Virginia American
Water is making in Virginia this year, following $9.5 million in investments it made in
2013 and $11 million in investments it made in 2012. This project, which will occur along St. Asaph Street from South Jefferson Street to its south end and Green Street from St. Asaph to South Royal Street, will be completed in about four months.
"This is another one of many critical projects we're working on in 2014 to proactively replace aging infrastructure in Alexandria," said Virginia American Water President Bill Walsh.
Crews will work in intersections weekdays between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:30
p.m., and outside of intersections 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the project, some residents are likely to experience temporary interruption of their water service when individual service lines are changed over to the new main, as well as when the old main is cut and capped. During work hours, at least one lane of traffic will always open to residents, and trash service, mail delivery, school busses and emergency vehicles will not be impacted. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the
length of any temporary inconveniences.
