PENNSYLVANIA AMERICAN WATER STARTS $1 MILLION WATER LINE UPGRADE IN DERRY TOWNSHIP HERSHEY, Pa. (April 14, 2017) - Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of new water main installation along Route 422 in Derry Township to improve service reliability, prevent water outages and enhance fire protection. The project will replace approximately 7,800 feet of aging and undersized pipe dating back to the 1920s, with an estimated cost of $1 million.

This week, crews started installing new 12-inch ductile iron pipe along Route 422 between Para Avenue and Baum Street. The company expects to complete pipe installation and service line tie-ins by October, weather permitting. PENNDoT has scheduled final paving restoration of Route 422 for 2018.

"This project is the final phase of replacing aging water infrastructure along Route 422 from Palmyra to Hershey, which started a couple years ago to ensure reliable water service and fire protection for the community," said Pennsylvania American Water Senior Manager of Operations Joseph Woodward.

Construction will take place weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction hours, and motorists are urged to give themselves extra time while traveling through the area or find alternate routes. During construction, customers might experience temporary water service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure.
