AMP Capital has named Denmark's 3XN as the winning architectural firm in its Design Excellence competition for the 50 Bridge Street tower and Masterplan architects for the Quay Quarter Sydney (QQS) precinct.

Following approval of the Stage 1 Development Application (DA) and the Local Environmental Plan being gazetted in June, AMP Capital held a design competition to achieve world-class design excellence for this significant project.

Six internationally-renowned architectural firms, including three Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architects, were invited to participate in the competition that has run for five months from the initial briefing in April 2014 to the winner being selected in September, as determined by a panel of six jury members.

The architects were asked to revitalise AMP's landmark site into a vibrant destination that will enrich the precinct with activated street retail, small cafes and bars opening onto intimate laneways, boutique residential apartments  and state of the art office accommodation that will offer collaborative workspaces.

Each had to also consider the significance of the site and make a positive contribution to the existing architecture of Sydney including the Sydney Opera House.

Louise Mason AMP Capital Managing Director Office & Industrial said that AMP has been in the Circular Quay precinct for over 50 years and has a deep respect for the heritage of the area and importantly, an exciting vision for the future.

Ms Mason said: "We are creating the best office space in Australia, a premier address for global business at the gateway to the financial district and core CBD.  This project will feature landmark architecture and leading edge urban design that will revitalise Sydney's northern CBD."

"Selecting a winning design for 50 Bridge Street is a significant milestone for the project enabling AMP Capital to realise our vision and aspiration to transform this landmark site at Circular Quay into a vibrant destination and create a new business and lifestyle precinct," Ms Mason added.

Kim Herforth Nielsen, Founding Partner and Creative Director 3XN said: "My colleagues and I at 3XN are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with AMP Capital to develop our competition-winning design for Quay Quarter Sydney.  This project looks at the 'high rise' in an entirely new way from both the inside out and outside in."

Mr Nielsen added: "Its dynamic, shifted massing providing stunning views for all of the building's users while also creating expansive open spaces that encourage possibility for interaction, knowledge sharing and vertical connectivity."

"The new tower will engage in an open dialogue with the city skyline and transform the Bridge and Alfred Street blocks into an exemplary international commercial address. We believe it will be a significant new addition to the cityscape," he said.

Following design development of 3XN's winning scheme, further Stage 2 DAs will need to be submitted and approved by the City of Sydney.

The AMP Centre is jointly owned by the Australian Core Property Portfolio (ACPP) and the AMP Capital Wholesale Office Fund (AWOF).
