When the brickwork of a weir in Kent was scrutinised by local health and safety authorities, the Environment Agency ordered the renovation of existing foundations so that they complied with modern standards. The barrier in question is located on the River Medway and fulfills a number of vital functions including regulating the flow of water - ultimately helping to reduce the risk of floods.

The need for construction reinforcements therefore meant that a dam had to be created in order to protect the local environment; and without affecting the efficiency of a nearby sewage treatment works.

Our original solution was to hire a series of PX12N submersible pumps when the river level was low, but these units were later replaced with 10" submersible solids handling pumps when water levels were higher. A number of important steps were also taken to ensure our impact on the surrounding area was minimised, including locating each pump within specially adapted fish-friendly tanks to protect wildlife in the tributary.

Far from merely delivering the equipment, we also sent regional experts to assess the project at regular intervals. The customer was very impressed with the level of service received and opted to use us on their next pump-related assignment a few weeks later.
