HeliX(TM) Scales to 8 Cores, 2.4GHz for Networking, Storage, Industrial Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 1, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (Nasdaq:AMCC), also known as AppliedMicro, today announced HeliX™, a family of ARMv8-A architecture based embedded products designed for use in wired and wireless networking, networked storage, office automation solutions and industrial controls. With the highest performing multicore 64-bit ARM®-based CPUs, HeliX technology enables scalability from fanless systems to high-end control plane processing.

Currently sampling and in production, the HeliX product line spans a wide range of performance capabilities, in two-, four- and eight-core configurations ranging from 1.2GH to 2.4GHz; 1-2 channels of high bandwidth DDR3 memory, 1-2 Integrated 10GbE NIC's, and I/O Virtualization. As the High End Embedded market transitions from 32Bit to 64Bit, there is an inflection point that welcomes ARMv8-A-based computing.

"HeliX represents the second significant new product category AppliedMicro has established in the past three years, and is designed to alleviate the fragmentation that currently defines the embedded market," said Paramesh Gopi, CEO of AppliedMicro. "Building on our first-mover advantage with the ARMv8-A architecture, HeliX offers custom, high performance, energy efficient cores for a wide range of end applications."

The AppliedMicro HeliX family of embedded processors ranges from 8-core, 2.4 GHz versions that can address the high performance demands of Enterprise networking to 2-core, 1.2 GHz versions that can satisfy the power-sipping demands of Energy Star compliant printers and routers. Fully supported by industry-standard software tool chain and operating systems, the HeliX family includes specific application accelerators that result in dramatic improvements in efficiency for the targeted workloads.

"AppliedMicro's HeliX takes advantage of the scalability of ARM 64-bit capable technology, delivering power-efficiency and performance across a range of SoCs addressing the high performance embedded sector," said Pete Hutton, executive vice president and president, product groups, ARM. "Through products such as Helix, augmented by the depth of support given by the ARM software ecosystem, the ARM partnership continues to offer compelling solutions that target tomorrow's communications infrastructure, enterprise and connected embedded needs." AppliedMicro launched its HeliX family of products at a live presentation at ARM TechCon 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
