ARCADIS (EURONEXT: ARCAD), the international consultancy, design, engineering and management services company, today announced that it will advise more than 150 European cities on how to deal with the impact of climate change. This will include the development and application of tailor-made climate adaptation strategies on behalf of the European Union. In this project ARCADIS cooperates with British consultancy AEA, ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives), the University of Manchester, the German firm Adelphi and the consultants of Alexander Ballard. Financial details were not disclosed.

Anticipating on climate change, especially in this time of economic crisis, is increasingly seen as a base requirement for stability and prosperity in the European Union. Especially cities are vulnerable for climate change.

ARCADIS advises a network of more than 150 cities, 21 of which through intensive coaching, about measures and appropriate strategies to prepare for changes in the climate. How do cities anticipate on how to deal with extremes like flooding, droughts and heat? How do cities in these times of economic crisis deal with investments in large infrastructure developments? Is there a fitting evacuation policy? But also raising awareness in Europe has to become part of the strategic policy at city level.

The project will also gather available know-how on climate change for the Directorate General Climate Action (DG Climate) of the European Union. Experience is exchanged and instruments are developed to design adaptation strategies. In this project the European Union will further develop the insights to develop an EU adaptation strategy. With this project, ARCADIS is further developing its European climate ambitions.
