AT&T Inc. : AT&T Gives Historic Navy Pier a High-Tech Network

AT&T* today announced that it has improved its mobile Internet coverage at Chicago's Historic Navy Pier® by launching a new 4G LTE-capable** Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to enhance the customer experience. The DAS enhances network capacity, helping alleviate pressure on wireless networks when thousands of people in a close proximity are actively using their mobile devices simultaneously.
This new (DAS) system at Navy Pier covers all of the 50-acre property, so patrons of the lakefront playground will see superior speeds and coverage whether they're texting while in line for the Ferris wheel, using an app to purchase IMAX® movie tickets, or even making a call in the parking garage. Even on the busiest days at Navy Pier, the DAS will enhance uploads, downloads, text messages and web surfing over the AT&T network.

The DAS installation at Navy Pier consists of strategically-placed antennas that distribute AT&T's wireless network coverage throughout the facility, which provides for more efficient management of wireless capacity in heavily-trafficked areas. The DAS has the ability to provide enhanced, consistent wireless voice and data coverage to customers inside Navy Pier.
In order to provide the enhanced and consistent coverage and capacity, the installation utilized the latest in in-building wireless network software, developed by iBwave, which has been used at hundreds of venues. "Designing the networks for a technically challenging locale such as Navy Pier requires the modeling and prediction capabilities of iBwave's software in order for the project to be delivered on time and on budget," says Mario Bouchard, President and CEO of iBwave. Launching the Navy Pier DAS system is just one part of AT&T's ongoing effort to deliver the nation's best, most advanced mobile Internet experience for customers. The additional capacity also is expected to help improve call reliability, boost data traffic capacity and enable more consistent network access to help customers at Navy Pier make the most of their AT&T devices.
