BENEFITS assessor Atos last night said it wanted to pull out of its contract with the Department for Work and Pensions.
The French-run firm said it hoped to finish before the current deal ends at the end of the summer.
A spokesman said: "In its current form it is not working for claimants, for DWP or for Atos Healthcare. "For several months now we have been endeavouring to agree an early exit from the contract, which is due to expire in August 2015."
It comes after 144 demos were held at Atos offices on Wednesday. Campaigners were protesting against health assessments which have ruled thousands of sick people were fit to work, axing vital benefits.
