AUO's WQHD Ultra High Resolution Smartphone LCD Panels Honored with 2014 SID Best in Show Award (2014.06.05)

AU Optronics Corp. ("AUO" or the "Company") (TAIEX: 2409; NYSE: AUO) announced today that it has garnered 2014 SID Best in Show award for its 5.5-inch and 6-inch ultra high resolution WQHD (1440x2560) LTPS (Low Temperature Poly-silicon) panels for smartphones. Organized by the Society for Information Display (SID), the awards were conferred to its recipients during Display Week. AUO was acknowledged by the expert committee among numerous exhibitors, marking the highlight of this year's show.

Since 2011, SID has been acknowledging the most significant new products and technologies showcased during Display Week through its expert committee. This year, AUO stood out among around 200 exhibitors from worldwide. Its WQHD ultra high resolution LCD panels for smartphones were recognized for their exceptional image quality and leading specifications, certifying again the pivotal role and leadership position AUO plays in ultra high resolution display technologies.

"We are deeply honored to have been selected for 2014 SID Best in Show award," said F.C. Hsiang, Executive VP & GM of AUO's Mobile Solutions Business Group. "This acknowledgement highlights AUO's outstanding capabilities in setting new standards for display specifications and technological developments. AUO will continue to develop and launch more ultra high resolution products and technologies to provide consumers with exceptional image quality and viewing experience."

In meeting the 4G era and the growth of smartphones with large screens, AUO led the industry in successfully mass producing its 6-inch WQHD smartphone display in the end of last year(*). The panel employs AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) technology and LTPS production, and has a resolution as high as 1440x2560, which is four times of HD resolution with 490 ppi (pixel per inch). Also adopting AHVA technology and LTPS production, AUO's 5.5-inch WQHD smartphone display has further enhanced its pixel density to 538 ppi, allowing for more complete presentation of web content and much sharper character display. The display is capable of demonstrating the most exquisite details and depth, and brings images to life when high resolution videos are played. In addition, its narrow border design results in a mere 0.7 mm width from display area to panel border, substantially increasing the viewing area and making the smartphone lighter and more compact.
