Munich, August 2017 - The AURELIUS Refugee Initiative e.V. is providing financial suppport worth 65,000 euros to the 'Haus des Lernens' ('House of Learning') project of the Orienthelfer e.V. in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. The money is intended to finance school tuition for 130 school pupils aged between six and nine for one year. This corresponds to an annual budget of about 500 euros per child. The 'Haus des Lernens' is situated about 20 kilometres from the Syrian border. The improved educational prospects for their children are intended to encourage Syrian refugee families to remain close to their home country of Syria.

With support from the international community, the Lebanese education system has opened up to Syrian children. The aim of the so-called RACE Programme ('Reaching All Children with Education'), which has been launched by the Lebanese Ministry of Education, is to provide a Lebanese school education for all school-age children in Lebanon by 2021. The so-called 'Accelerated Learning Program (ALP)' aims to bring Syrian children up to Lebanese educational standards - in particular in foreign languages, which receive intense teaching emphasis in Lebanon. At the moment, about 150,000 of the approximately 450,000 Syrian refugee children attend Lebanese schools. NGOs are no longer permitted to operate any independent schools in Lebanon but may carry out accompanying and/or supporting work.

The 'Haus des Lernens' offers education in three areas:

  • pre-school education for 470 children which will give them a better start in the Lebanese education system;
  • manual and vocational education for teenagers and young adults as part of a cooperation project with the Berufliche Fortbildungszentren der Bayerischen Wirtschaft (Advanced Vocational Training Centres of the Bavarian Employers' Association, or bfz);
  • school tuition for 130 school pupils to prepare them for the ALP or provide assistance for them in the ALP or when attending Lebanese schools.
