$20m upgrade for Pakenham Zone Substation

AusNet Services will undertake a $20m project to upgrade the Pakenham zone substation, which supplies more than 14,000 electricity customers in the growing area.

The project will enhance the security of electricity supply to much of the Pakenham township and the nearby region, including Pakenham South, Cora Lynn, Nar Nar Goon, Tynong and Maryknoll.

Gareth Downes, AusNet Services' Regional Customer and Community Manager, said the investment will futureproof the electricity supply for the growing Pakenham community.

"The local population and business activity are growing rapidly, as is the demand for electricity," Mr Downes said.

"We are upgrading and modernising the facility to ensure a reliable supply of electricity to surrounding residents and businesses for the foreseeable future, and to cater for projected growth in this booming area," he said.

Works at the zone substation, located at the corner of Racecourse Road and the Princes Highway, will begin in early October and are scheduled to be completed in 12 months.

The works include replacing the three existing transformers and installing two larger transformers to provide greater capacity and supply security. The zone substation will continue to operate while the works are being undertaken.

"Significant planning has gone into the project to minimise inconvenience to local residents and business owners from the works, and to ensure the work can be completed safely," Mr Downes said.

"We've been in touch with neighbouring residents to discuss the works, along with municipal authorities," he said.

The size and appearance of the facility are not expected to change significantly.
