B&M opened its 5 store in Sunderland on Saturday, providing a welcome jobs boost to the area.

The new Home Store & Garden centre is located on the site of the former B&Q on Ryhope Road and is the second B&M store to open in the city this year.

It follows hot on the heels of the recent Bargains Store at Sunderland Gateway, Roker which opened its doors back in March, and brings the combined number of jobs created by the two stores to over 100.

66 employees have been tasked with bringing B&M's selection of branded and own-label products to even more shoppers on Tyne & Wear. Opening day customers were able to browse a large range of products, from homeware and toys to grocery, electricals and gardening lines.

To celebrate the occasion, Mayor of Sunderland Councillor Alan Emerson cut the ribbon to officially open the store, while Radio Metro's Cash for Kids charity were also on hand to participate.

The charity raises money that goes towards helping children across Tyne & Wear who are disabled, disadvantaged or suffering from abuse or neglect.

Representative for the charity received £250 worth of B&M vouchers as a thank you for taking part in the opening ceremony.

Jayne Kemp, store manager at the Ryhope Road store, said: 'The team from Cash for Kids really stood out for us as they go the extra mile for the community, we wanted to give them some VIP treatment as a thank you for all the hard work they do.

'We hope that our donation can help them to continue the great work they do.'

She also commented: 'We can't wait to get the doors open on Saturday and show customers their new B&M Ryhope.'

B&M is one of the fastest growing retailers in the UK, with over 500 stores nationwide and employs more than 22,000 staff.
