BAE Systems : New bridging test rig latest step in Telford transformation

The rig, which is the latest step in an extensive £5m investment and transformation programme to provide a unique capability in the UK to support engineering development and subsequent design validation of bridge structures.

Accommodating structures of up to 62 metres in length and with a static load capacity of 220 tonnes, the bridging test rig adds to the extensive range of design and testing capabilities available at BAE Systems' Telford site. This includes a Systems Integration Facility, 3D visualisation dome, heavy armour workshop, Final Assembly and Build Standard line and 1.6km test track.

Jennifer Osbaldestin, Managing Director, BAE Systems, Combat Vehicles (UK) said: 'We are ambitious to grow out Combat Vehicles business in the UK and internationally. We understand that to enable growth we need to invest in people, technologies and infrastructure.

'Our investment plans continue with preparations underway for a turret test facility planned for 2016 in readiness for the Challenger 2 main battle tank life extension programme.'

The bridging test rig will be fully commissioned by the end of quarter one 2016. It is designed to support business winning campaigns including the UK Ministry of Defence bridging upgrade programme Tyro.

BAE Systems' Telford site is being transformed through a significant capital investment programme. Last month, employees celebrated the completion of new facilities including a new reception and new offices to co-locate 300 employees.

Combat Vehicles (UK) employs approximately 450 people over four UK locations. Recent developments are part of larger activity which sees the business investing in its future to retain key skills, provide upgraded facilities and develop new technologies. This together with sustained engagement and collaboration with supply chain partners will enable Combat Vehicles (UK) to meet current and future UK and international customer requirements.
