BAE Systems : Setting the standard for quality apprenticeships

The new recruits, most of whom will be trained in engineering related roles, will have the opportunity to enhance their skills and learn how to develop cutting edge defence, aerospace and security technologies.

The Company's sought-after training programmes reflect its long-term commitment to delivering high quality apprentice and graduate programmes and the aim to ensure more young people have the right skills to meet future workload demands.

This year for the first time, a group of apprentices began their training on the new Aerospace and Airworthiness trailblazer apprenticeship standards, approved by the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills in March 2015. The new standards, designed by BAE Systems and other companies in the sector, will ensure that apprentices receive consistently high quality training and meet the needs of large companies and SMEs.

In addition, BAE Systems will train 32 apprentices on the Aerospace Engineer and Aerospace Software Development Engineer Degree Apprenticeships at its Military Air and Information business. This new scheme will allow apprentices to study part-time for a Foundation Degree and Level 4 Diploma, whilst gaining hands-on experience with some of the world's most advanced aerospace technology, before going on to study for a full Honours degree.

Top tier apprenticeships are vital to the prosperity of the engineering sector and the wider UK economy. Earlier this year BAE Systems released data showing labour productivity for its workforce is double the UK average.

Of the record 724 apprentices who joined the Company last month, approximately half will be based at the Company's submarine design and manufacturing site in Barrow-in-Furness shipyard in Cumbria, which requires hundreds of highly skilled staff to deliver the five remaining Astute class attack submarines and to develop the new 'Successor' submarines.

More than 120 of the 292 graduates to join the Company will start work within the cyber security business, in response to the need to help organisations protect themselves from the increased threat of fraud, cyber-attack and digital criminality.

Case studies:

Matthew Tetlow, Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Scheme

17 year-old Matthew Tetlow joined BAE Systems' Military Aircraft and Information business in September, as one of the first on the new Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Scheme (EDAS). Over the next three years, he will spend three days per week working onsite with BAE Systems, whilst the other two are spent at the University of Central Lancashire studying for a foundation degree in Software Engineering, progressing to achieve a full honours degree by the end of the apprenticeship.

Giverney Newman, Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Scheme

19 year-old Giverney Newman joined BAE Systems' Military Aircraft and Information business in September, as one of the first on the new Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Scheme (EDAS). Over the next five years, she will spend four days per week working onsite with BAE Systems, whilst one day is spent at a local university where she will work towards an Honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

Regional breakdown

Submarines:

• 275 apprentice and 35 higher apprentice roles at Barrow including four higher apprentice roles split across sister submarine design sites in Weymouth, Dorset and Ash Vale, Surrey.
• 32 graduates at Barrow, Weymouth, Dorset and Ash Vale, Surrey.

Military Air and Information:

• 148 apprentice and 52 higher apprentice roles required for the military aircraft design, production and support sites in Warton and Samlesbury in Lancashire, Humberside and Brough in Yorkshire and at Yeovil, Somerset. An additional 10 apprentices will be trained for supplier companies in the North West.
• 48 graduates in Warton and Samlesbury in Lancashire, Humberside and Brough in Yorkshire and at Yeovil, Somerset.

Naval Ships and Maritime Services:

• 121 apprentice and 18 higher apprentice roles at the shipbuilding and support sites in Glasgow and Portsmouth. BAE Systems will also train an additional 14 apprentices will be trained for engineering companies in the Solent.
• 9 apprentice roles with the Naval Combat Systems business, across three sites in Surrey (Frimley, New Malden and Glasgow).
• 58 graduates at Glasgow, Portsmouth, Frimley, New Malden and the Solent.

Electronic Systems:

• 10 graduates and 10 apprentice roles at the Company's electronic systems business in Rochester, Kent

Applied Intelligence:

• 123 graduates and eight apprentice roles at BAE Systems' cyber security and intelligence arm whose offices are in Leeds, Yorkshire and Guildford, Surrey

Combat Vehicles:

• 2 graduates and 15 apprentice roles with the Combat Vehicles UK business in Telford, Shropshire

Munitions:

• 9 apprentice roles and 1 higher apprentice with the Munitions UK business divided equally between three sites: Glascoed in Monmouthshire, at Washington, Tyne and Wear and at Radway Green in Cheshire
• 1 graduate role at Glascoed and Radway

UK other:

• 18 graduates in training at the Company Head office and sites around the UK
