BAE Systems has worked with the Digital Railway programme to create a vision and industry architecture that will underpin the digital transformation of the rail network.

The Digital Railway is a transformational business change programme to modernise the rail network for the benefit of passengers, the freight industry and the wider economy by delivering capacity, performance and cost improvements. Modernising the network with digital technology will ensure Britain has the railway it needs - one that connects more people and goods to more places and with reduced journey times.

BAE Systems has helped to define the approach to unlock additional capacity by transitioning away from the current command and control approach to a new automatic traffic management solution. This will increase efficiency by managing the flow of trains using mobile communications and distributed software, which will enable trains to travel closer together on the tracks whilst maintaining safety standards.

Martin Arter, Programme Development Director for the Digital Railway programme at Network Rail said:

'This is a highly ambitious transformational programme that will revolutionise the way we use our resources. BAE Systems have delivered the first iteration of an industry architecture proving that it can deliver and integrate the required combination of engineering and IT disciplines. Their unique mix of capabilities and collaborative approach have been pivotal to the development of this industry transformation programme. This has given us firm foundations for programme planning and ongoing industry engagement to further develop the programme.'

Julian Cracknell, UK Services Managing Director, BAE Systems Applied Intelligence said:

'The BAE Systems team worked collaboratively as ambassadors for the Digital Railway programme, engaging senior stakeholders throughout the industry to understand their viewpoints and plans. These insights fed into the development of the Concept of Digital Railway, providing a vision for the digital evolution of the railway industry.

We applied our proven System-of-Systems Engineering and Business Change processes to establish an Industry Architecture and a capability development framework; a first for the UK Rail industry, enabling a coherent approach to the future evolution of the industry.

As the Digital Railway System Integrator we have played a key role within the programme, delivering significant value to the early development of Digital Railway and look forward to continuing our support in the future. '

BAE Systems has a strong track record of delivering digital transformation in transport incorporating systems engineering, enterprise architecture, digital and systems integration, to improve the performance of national rail networks, motorway networks and metro railways.

About Digital Railway

Digital Railway is a proposal for a national plan that delivers the pace, coordination, and whole-industry approach needed to unlock the transformational benefits of a digital network.

The whole of the rail industry has a part to play in delivering a successful step-change to a more digital railway - from taking the big strategic choices about the best way it can support economic growth in an affordable way, to re-skilling staff to help make it happen.

The Digital Railway programme has been established to enable this, led by a Steering Group that brings together government, the rail regulator, industry and supply chain.

On behalf of this partnership, the role of the Digital Railway is to:

  • Deliver the analysis that decision-makers need to judge the costs and benefits of digital ways of working to meet the government's priorities for the railway.
  • Identify which options for funding and managing a more digital railway maximise affordability, value for money and performance.
  • Enable the stakeholders with a vital stake in railway to shape its future. In its first year, the programme has heard the views of thousands of stakeholders, from passenger groups, to Local Economic Partnerships to technology start-ups.
  • Connect plans to action by delivering targeted digital upgrades.
