The JBG Companies has selected Balfour Beatty Construction to build its latest project in Washington D.C.’s vibrant U Street corridor. Named 13|U, the new mixed-use project will feature 129 residential units, 15,750 square feet of retail and 48 below-grade parking spaces near the U Street/Cardozo Metro station. Balfour Beatty is providing construction manager at risk services for the new development and began demolition of the existing building in June.

Its fourth building for JBG in the U Street corridor, Balfour Beatty recently completed the developer’s The Hatton and The Shay mixed-use developments, and turned over The Louis at 14th and U in 2014. Located in D.C.’s active Shaw neighborhood, the 13|U project will bring new market-rate and affordable housing units to a resurgent, urban community. With extensive experience managing projects in active, urban environments, Balfour Beatty will work closely with JBG to carefully coordinate construction activities with its neighbors. In addition, the Balfour Beatty team will leverage the latest technologies and Lean construction methods to efficiently deliver JBG’s 13|U project.

“The revitalization of the Shaw neighborhood is exciting and indicative of a trend we’re seeing with our clients in major metropolitan areas around the country,” said David Laib, senior vice president of Balfour Beatty. “Our team takes great pride in establishing long-term partnerships and we’re thrilled to continue our long relationships with JBG and the city.”

The 13|U groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 8 on the project site at 1300 U Street NW. The ceremony featured speeches from a number of business and civic leaders involved with the project, including D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, JBG Partner Kai Reynolds, James Turner of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, and Mazi Mutafa of the nonprofit Words Beats & Life.

“This development will strengthen this vibrant neighborhood by creating more affordable housing for D.C. residents, and by offering more job opportunities for our talented workforce,” said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser at the 13|U groundbreaking ceremony.
