Baloise collects bicycles for Velafrica

Basel, 9 March 2018. Baloise donates stolen and subsequently recovered bicycles of its policyholders to the charity Velafrica if their owners no longer want them back. The charitable organisation collects more than 24,000 bikes from across Switzerland every year, repairs them as necessary and ships them to Africa. This year, Baloise was able to contribute another 50 bikes that were donated as part of a staff campaign.

When bicycles are stolen, it is not uncommon for them to be found again later on. By this time, the policyholder has often already received compensation and is no longer interested in the recovered bike. The collaboration with Velafrica ensures that these bicycles are put to good use. "In Africa, having a bike makes a bigger difference than we can imagine. It makes it easier for people to cover longer distances, which has a significant positive impact on many aspects of their lives, such as access to food and water, and to education. A bike can improve the life of a child, a family or even an entire village," says Paolo Richter, CEO of Velafrica.

In addition to changing its process for unwanted recovered bikes, Baloise also ran its first internal bicycle collection campaign this year. "We are very happy that so many bicycles were donated by our employees in Basel," says Gian Domenico Fiorot, who manages the Velafrica project at Baloise. "This event is a great addition to our corporate social responsibility initiatives."
