The latest study by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism reveals a surprising fact: less than a quarter of social media users think that social media does a good job separating fact from fiction, the Financial Times reports (with subscription). The study also indicates that 40% of people trust what they read in the media.

The Reuters Institute also found encouraging signs that more people are willing to pay to read news online, as they are anxious to get the latest on current global events, such as Donald Trump's presidency, Brexit and terrorism.

This news arrives after social media like Facebook and YouTube have been in the spotlight in recent months due to pressure for them to filter out fake news and extremist content.
