Spain's moped sector has seen three consecutive years of sales growth thanks to ecommerce and tourism. 13,500 mopeds have been registered so far this year, which represents 23% accumulated growth from January to August, according to the National Association of Companies in the Two Wheeled Sector (Anesdor), Cinco Días reports.

Although the sector does not think sales will go back to where they were a decade ago, when 100,000 mopeds were registered in one year, it does believe that this mode of transportation is being rediscovered. After being replaced by lightweight motorcycles in recent years, the growing number of tourists and ecommerce are breathing new life into the moped sector.

Currently, the channel experiencing the greatest increase in registrations is rentals, which have risen 107%. This increase can be explained by the success of vehicle rental apps that tourists also use to get to different attractions. Growth in online shopping has also made mopeds a good way for companies to deliver their orders. The transportation company Seur alone delivers 4,000 packages per day using these vehicles.

Spain is sixth in the EU for the number of mopeds registered in 2016. The 17,230 registered mopeds were surpassed only by France with 89,732; the Netherlands with 67,825; Germany with 30,109; Italy with 24,575; and Poland with 23,908.
