Renewable energy accounted for 24.5% of the world's energy production in 2016. The renewables sector also managed to meet 19.3% of world energy demand, according to a study by the German electric company Kaiserwetter, as reported by the Spanish state news agency EFE.

Currently, China is the country that invests the most in renewable energy, providing 32% of the funds allocated to the sector. China is followed by the United States, with 19%; the United Kingdom, with 10%; Japan with 6%; and Germany, with 5%.

The year 2016 saw the highest clean energy production to date. A total of 138.5 gigawatts were produced, or 55.3% of all newly-generated gigawatts in the year. These figures have helped to lower the cost of energy, which required 23% less investment.
