Banco de Sabadell : Laura Díaz Anadón wins the seventeenth Banco Sabadell Foundation Award for Economic Research

The Jury of the seventeenth Banco Sabadell Foundation Award for Economic Research has named Dr Laura Díaz Anadón as the winner of the 2018 award, consisting of €30,000, for her work on climate change, a project that combines core research with the development of public policy to guide the work carried out by governments and international organisations. The award will be given out on October 2nd at the Banco Sabadell headquarters in Oviedo.

Dr Diaz Anadón is an international role model for research into the interaction between science and technology and public policy. Her work has improved our understanding of how different public policies can allow us to take on the challenges of climate change. The award recognises her work, which analyses the role that new and improved energy technologies (including solar power, wind power, energy storage and nuclear power) could play in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which contribute to climate change, and lowering energy technology costs.

Her research uses optimisation models, econometric methods, and in a number of cases has supplemented quantitative assessments with qualitative evaluations based on interviews. In particular, she has carried out an in-depth investigation into policies and technologies in the countries with the highest volumes of greenhouse gas emissions - the United States and China. This project analyses how different methods of distributing funds in national laboratories influence the transfer of technology to energy companies, and evaluates the impact that different policies aimed at promoting wind power can have on wind turbine productivity.

More about Dr Laura Díaz Anadón

Dr Díaz Anadón has a joint honours degree in chemical engineering and German (MEng) from the University of Manchester, and a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Cambridge. She currently holds the chaired Professorship of Climate Change Policy at the University of Cambridge. At Cambridge, she is a Bye-Fellow at Peterhouse College and a Fellow at the Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (CEENRG). She is also a Research Associate at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Banco Sabadell Foundation Award for Economic Research

This award, consisting of €30,000, aims to foster and recognise the work of researchers in the fields of economic, business, legal and social knowledge, and to contribute to the analysis and creation of new alternatives that promote social welfare. The award has been given out every year since 2002.

It is aimed at researchers under the age of 40 who have an outstanding research curriculum in the aforementioned fields. Candidates for the Award can be put forward by universities, academic and research centres, foundations, companies and other institutions both in Spain and abroad.
