Bank Mandiri Helps Distribute Sinabung Assistance Using E-Money
10/29/14

Jakarta, 29 October 2014 - Bank Mandiri is channeling assistance using its electronic money (e-money) facilities to hundreds of families that have fallen victim to the Mount Sinabung volcanic eruption in North Sumatra.

Bank Mandiri Corporate Secretary Rohan Hafas said that those who were entitled to receive assistance could collect it through Bank Mandiri offices, as well as retail outlets and post offices. "We will send assistance to the victims of the eruption through accounts that have the same numbers as the recipients' mobile phones," Rohan said.

Previously, Bank Mandiri tested the channeling of Program Keluarga Harapan (Family Hope Program / PKH) funds using electronic money channels through the use of a Digital Finance Services Agency (LKD) as the payment agency in Tugu Selatan sub-district, Koja District, North Jakarta. The tryout was conducted in collaboration with Bank Indonesia, the Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Planning / Bappenas, Ministry of Finance and National Poverty Reduction Acceleration Team (TNP2K).

As part of the PKH assistance distribution process, the money is transferred directly by Bank Mandiri to each recipient's mobile phone number.

This development of this assistance distribution arrangement, continued Rohan, forms part of Bank Mandiri's efforts to support Bank Indonesia's National Non-Cash Movement (GNNT). In addition, it is expected to increase public awareness of non-cash banking services so as to boost transaction efficiency and effectiveness.

"Based on our branchless banking trials last year, we are optimistic that this concept will bring the Bank closer to the people so as to increase the level of financial inclusion in Indonesia," Rohan said.
