Recently, Baosteel Co., Ltd made the first profit for having sold a total amount of 10,000 tons of carbon emission credit in Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange. This was the first time for Baosteel to trade the carbon emission credit in this market since the establishment of this carbon trading market at the end of last year. Also, it was the real money that earned by Baosteel by trading carbon emission credit saved.

Since 2013, China has carries out a pilot environment-friendly policy, that is, in carbon trading, participating companies will be charged to confer the right to discharge every 1 ton of carbon dioxide above allocated quotas in some provinces. However, many major energy users regard carbon emission credit as a "hostile wolf"; on the contrary, some other enterprises are considering the carbon emission trading as a "money-maker", for the reason that, if the enterprises spare more efforts in cutting carbon emission and energy conservation, any carbon emission credit saved can be traded in exchange for cash. Shanghai launched its carbon trading market, no doubt, it is a choice of "wolf" or "money" for those participating firms. As long as it puts the energy-saving emission reduction measures into practice, the enterprises can earn a sum of substantial additional income; Meanwhile, the participating companies have to pay the additional cost to buy credits for carbon emissions above the initial free allocated quotas.

Baosteel is as always committed to realize the green iron-making and steel-making company, Shanghai launched its pilot carbon trading market, which is a new driving force for Baosteel to materialize its pursuit. Shanghai's pilot program caps emissions from some major energy users, including industrial companies, which were granted initial free quotas based on their expected emissions from the Shanghai local government. Currently, the carbon credits given to Baosteel was estimated on the basis of Baosteel's average discharging volume of carbon from 2009 to 2011. Nevertheless, it was during the period of that time that the world has been dancing with global financial crisis, Baosteel did not run with its full capacity all at, therefore, the carbon emissions are still far below peak, thus, the initial free granted quotas is very hard up.

Since 2012, Baosteel Co., Ltd gave full advantages of in-depth potential strengths to reduce carbon emissions by two aspects of energy-saving technology and energy-saving management, which made the energy-consumption firm upgrade its clean production technology, therefore, Baosteel had a slight surplus of carbon credits from the expected tough initial free granted quotas.

Baosteel Co., Ltd centralized the energy-saving technologies in the six disciplines from the different departments under the companies onto the platform, that is, efficient power plant, high-efficiency BF, high-efficiency motors, recovery of waste heat, energy-saving in compressed air, and optimization of waste water treatment, playing the advantages of the new energy-saving mechanism in management contract, to accelerate upgrading on energy conservation and application of new technologies, and thus, to promote the development of green energy. A case in point, Baosteel has built up the largest rooftop photovoltaic power generation station to supply green power in the world, with reducing emissions of carbon dioxide at of 30,000 tons/annually. In 2013, Baosteel has put 41 energy-saving projects into operation, suggesting that the ever-increasing energy saved is equivalent to 108,000 tons/yearly of standard coal, with reducing emissions of carbon dioxide at of 350,000 tons/yearly, which laid a solid foundation for Baosteel to overfulfill the targets of "campaign of cutting carbon emission and energy-saving participated by the most of" launched by the Chinese government.
