Can LED-lit video walls help reduce operating costs? Can a networked visualization solution help optimize traffic control operations? Ask EUROCONTROL, Europe's air traffic controller, and the answer will be a resounding 'yes'.

Since 2006

At the EUROCONTROL headquarters in Brussels, operators have monitored the European traffic and weather situation, as well as a wide range of technical systems and data, on two large Barco video walls since 2006. When, in 2014, the lamp technology had become obsolete and the maintenance contract expired, Barco swapped the existing lamps for its LED-based technology and installed a network-centric visualization solution.

From image quality to redundancy

Giovanni Lenti, head of Network Operations confirms that the new technology allows his team to capture many more sources, like digital signals from satellites, and easily change the screen content and size. "The difference is striking," added project manager Paul Saccasyn. "While the operators love the ease of use and the brighter, more stable images with crisp colors, the management greatly appreciates the lower operating costs." Saccasyn also points to the redundancy features offered by the new set-up and adds how Barco underscores EURCONTROL's professionalism: "It demonstrates that we are truly committed to improving the performance of the European aviation network.
