A shoppers' utopia
After last week's visit to the medieval towns of Ypres and Bruges, you'll be amazed by the glamorous, futuristic urban destination that Dubai is. There is no better place to feel the pulse of the city than Downtown Dubai. So, when arriving at the airport, walk into the metro and disembark at the supersized Dubai Mall - the world's largest mall - at the foot of the world's tallest building, the 509-meter-high Burj Khalifa. Featuring 1,200 shops, the Dubai Mall is a shoppers' utopia. Did you know that Barco was the main LED supplier to the mall when it opened in 2009, or that the 22-screen Reel Cinemas in Dubai Mall is the largest Barco Flagship Laser cineplex in the world?
Dubai Canal: the city's newest hotspot From the Dubai Mall, it's only a short walk to Dubai Canal, one of the grandest projects realized in the city over the past few years. The 3.2-kilometer canal connects Dubai Creek with the Arabian Gulf, cutting an elegant swathe through the city center. Stroll - or cycle - along the canal, cross the pedestrian bridges and take in the stunning vistas. Within a few years, this district will look different again, as there are ambitious plans to construct striking buildings and even a whole new peninsula featuring more beach areas and a marina. Did we already tell you that Barco had the honor of empowering the canal's spectacular opening ceremony in November last year?
In need of some refreshment? We know, strolling through the mall and a walk along the Canal in Dubai can be pretty exhausting. Why not end your day in this city of superlatives with a splash in one of the world's largest swimming pools? Built for the World Swimming Championships in December 2010, the Hamdan Bin Rashid Sports Complex features a 50-m competition pool, a 25-m dive pool and a 50-m warm-up pool. And indeed, there's a link with Barco: we equipped the venue with an impressive number of LED displays. Enjoy your swim!
