• Community storage, household filtration for short term; rainwater and sewage recycling for medium term
  • Ideas developed locally through BASF global co-creation project
  • First BASF 150th anniversary white paper published at creator-space.basf.com

Mumbai, India - October 20, 2015 - BASF, the world's leading chemical company and a provider of water treatment technologies, has published a white paper exploring a range of community-based challenges and solutions for water in Mumbai.

Beginning early this year, BASF worked with 66 experts in Mumbai, including technical specialists, non-governmental organizations and even artists, to explore the topic of improved access to safe, affordable water in the metro Mumbai area. Discussion areas included changes in technology, policy and behavior. These efforts were part of a global initiative to co-create solutions related to urbanization, energy and food, to mark the 150th anniversary of the company.

Ideas developed by the group include projects for community storage and household filtration in the short term, with rainwater harvesting from concrete and sewage recycling in the medium term. While some challenges for Mumbai's water supply are unique to the rapidly growing metropolitan area, others are typical for many large Indian cities and for emerging-market megacities worldwide.

Following its 150th anniversary co-creation activities in Shanghai, New York, and other locations, BASF will publish new white papers on a range of challenges and solutions for urban living.
