Ground compaction for a new canal near Leipzig

Leipzig/Zwenkau, Germany - South of Leipzig, numerous lakes resulting from mining have been filled with water and prepared for public use over the past decades under the project sponsorship of Lausitzer und Mitteldeutsche Bergbau-Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH (LMBV). In the future, some of these lakes will be interconnected. A key project for this is the construction of the approximately 790-meter-long Harth Canal between Lake Zwenkau and Lake Cospuden. As part of a joint venture, BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH has been carrying out the necessary ground improvements since March 2015.

The entire area of the planned canal consists of loosely poured surface mining tips up to 60 meters thick. The ground must be compacted for the planned facilities and its load-bearing capacity improved. With a BAUER BG 40 and a BG 46 which have been specially modified for this purpose, Bauer is installing more than 13,400 vibro stone columns up to 25 meters in length. Using a BG 28 and a BG 30, more than 2,700 gravel bored piles around 20 meters in length are also being drilled. The work of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH is expected to be completed by the start of 2016.

After the completion of the Harth Canal, boats will be able to sail from the Zwenkau Harbor into the innercity of Leipzig. At a fairway depth of 2.5 meters (at medium water level), the water connection will serve as both a means of water tourism and a drain for the natural excess water of Lake Zwenkau.
