BayWa expands international malting barley business

Acquisition of Evergrain KG

BayWa AG has purchased a majority stake in Hamburg-based Evergrain KG. The acquisition by the Munich-based trading and services company is subject to approval by the anti-trust authorities. Evergrain is specialised in the international malting barley trade. The acquisition makes BayWa a leading international malting barley trader. The annual brewing grain trading volume is set to grow to over 1 million tonnes in the years ahead.

BayWa will merge its current malting barley activities with Evergrain's business to form a single unit within the Group. "The new unit will benefit from the Group-wide platform for agricultural trade and logistics," Klaus Josef Lutz, Chief Executive Officer of BayWa AG, explains. "By acquiring a stake in Evergrain, BayWa is expanding its malting barley business on the international stage and will take over a leading role in this specialised trade segment." The EU continues to hold the greatest sales potential in store, with additional opportunities emerging in South American and Asian growth markets.

Evergrain is a successful partner to international malt houses and breweries. The company mainly serves customers in the brewing and malting industry in Europe, Asia and South America. "In BayWa, we have a strong partner on board to further develop our international ambitions," says Andries de Groen, Managing Partner of Evergrain KG. "Our partners will benefit in the future of improved access to key markets combined with strong origination expertise." Evergrain's procurement activities focus on cultivation regions in Western Europe, Argentina and Australia. The acquisition will improve access to these key procurement markets for malting barely. The trading department's specialisation also has the potential to strengthen the successful local marketing business, especially in Germany and Europe.
