CHEYENNE, Wyo. - March 17, 2017 - Black Hills Energy will be observing national Natural Gas Utility Workers' Day on March 20, 2017. This is an opportunity to recognize Black Hills Energy employees who provide natural gas service safely and reliably to customers.

National Natural Gas Utility Workers' Day is observed on March 18. On that date in 1937, an explosion occurred in a New London, Texas, school. The event led to the widespread odorization of natural gas and an increased emphasis on safety. Safety is a critical element for natural gas distribution, and natural gas distribution companies' employees work hard to make sure they deliver natural gas as safely as possible.

Black Hills Energy is pleased to serve more than 165,000 customers in 57 communities throughout Wyoming. There are approximately 4,700 total miles of natural gas transmission and distribution lines in the state. Our employees carefully maintain those lines to make sure homes and businesses in Wyoming receive the natural gas they need.

'We are observing March 20 to recognize the efforts of our natural gas utility workers and the other utility workers who safely provide natural gas to customers across the country,' said Shirley Welte, Black Hills Energy's vice president of natural gas and electric operations. 'Our first priority is always public safety, and we are committed to serving the needs of customers. Our Black Hills Energy employees commit daily to deliver natural gas as safely as possible. Our crews work in deep trenches, perform welding on gas lines to seal connections or make repairs, perform leak detection and ensure pipeline integrity. It's because of their safe work ethic and dedication to customer service that we celebrate their efforts, not just today, but every day.'
